Welcome to the 2014-2015 School Year!
PALM BEACH MARITIME ACADEMY
July 28, 2014
Dear Parents, Grandparents and Friends of PBMA,
Welcome to the 2014-2015 School Year! Hopefully this letter finds you well and answers many questions about the opening weeks.
NEW SCHOOL HOURS (a very slight change)
· Lantana 1 Campus (K-5) new hours will be from 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. This provides your children with an additional 35 minutes of learning daily. Children may be dropped off as early as
7:30 a.m. (but not before unless you have registered for before-care), and breakfast will be served from 7:40 a.m. – 7:55 a.m. We will stop serving breakfast at 7:55 a.m. All students are expected to be in class ready to work at 8:00 a.m. SHARP.
· Lantana 2 Campus (middle/high school and 5th grade honors) new hours will be from 8:50 a.m. to 3:50 p.m., ten minutes earlier than last year. Breakfast will be served from 8:30 a.m. – 8:45 a.m. and we will stop serving at 8:45 a.m. Our Lantana 2 campus will be open at 8:30 a.m. for drop off. Students will be expected to be in class ready to work at 8:50 a.m.
KINDERGARTEN & 1st GRADE
Kindergarten and 1st grade parents who wish to walk their children to class may do so on the first day of school only, and only between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. Therefore, if you are a parent of a K or 1st grader and wish to walk him/her to class, you may only do so between 9:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. and you will be able to stay only briefly so the teachers can get students settled. If you cannot make this time, please use the regular arrival pattern.
We have moved a few bus stops and added more to the list. The two stops that were moved were per property owners’ requirements. The registration forms for the busses along with all other forms are online at palmbeachmaritimeacademy.org. Please fill them out and return them to school as soon as possible. Some are not interactive as we need original signatures.
“MEET THE TEACHERS” - AUGUST 15TH
This is an opportunity for parents to meet and greet the teachers and see their child’s classroom. Children are definitely welcome! This also will take only a few minutes and will help the children feel more comfortable on opening day. Times for “Meet the Teachers” will be: Grades K & 5 (including the honors class at Lantana 2) from 1:00 p.m.-2:00 p.m., Grades 1 & 4 from 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m., and Grades 2 & 3 from 3:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. Times at Lantana 2, Grades 6-10, are 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. for all students in all classes.
“CURRICULUM NIGHT” – SEPTEMBER 4th
“Curriculum Night” is an important annual event to help parents become familiar with their child’s teacher, curriculum, routines and expectations for the school year. “Curriculum Night” will take place on .September 4th as follows: Lantana 1 Grades K and 5 (not including 5th honors) from 5:30 p.m. –
6:00 p.m, for Grades 1 and 4 from 6:15 – 6:45 p.m. and for Grades 2 and 3 from7:00pm – 7:30 p.m. On our Lantana 2 Campus, times will start at 6:00 p.m. for Group 1 and 7:30 p.m. for Group 2. Groups will be assigned prior to Curriculum Night, but we want everyone to set the evening aside so as to attend this important event. Please be on time for your grade level.
ARRIVAL & DISMISSAL PROCEDURES
Arrival and dismissal procedures will be the same as last year. Please keep an eye on our PBMA website for videos with directions. We will continue to offer our Shuttle service only to the parents who have children in BOTH Lantana 1 and Lantana 2. Middle and high school students who attend Lantana 2 and have siblings in Lantana 1 may be dropped off at Lantana 1 between 7:30 and 7:50am a.m.; they will be transported to Lantana 2. This shuttle will leave at 7:55 a.m. Parents of students who are late will have to drop them off at Lantana 2 as we will only run one shuttle. Students in Lantana 1 who have siblings in Lantana 2 will be brought to our Lantana 2 Campus at the end of the day and will go home with their older brother or sister. Keep an eye on the website for sign-ups. Again, this is only for families who have children attending BOTH campuses.
PARENT GROUP – AUGUST 7th
It is my hope to start a new parent group this year. Please join me on Thursday, August 7th at 6:00 p.m. at Lantana 1 (1518 West Lantana Road – the elementary school) for a discussion and to begin setting up committees to best assist the school and the teachers. Although the meeting will be at the elementary school, the initial meeting will be for all interested parents.
PALM BEACH MARITIME ACADEMY GOVERNING BOARD
Our Board members are Bill Burckart, Scott Shelley, and Steve Bolin. They can be reached at either campus at 562-547-3775 or 562-578-5700. If you have any questions or concerns (or want to tell them how wonderful we are!), please put it in writing with the name of the Board member on the envelope, and it will be delivered. The procedure is outlined in the handbook. Our management company this year is the Palm Beach Maritime Foundation.
Parents will not be allowed in either lobby during arrival and dismissal. Please conduct any business during other school hours. This is a security issue and will be strictly enforced.
Please access our website (www.palmbeachmaritimeacademy.org) and Facebook page frequently as all forms including before and after care registration, bus sign-ups etc., videos and announcements will be posted. This will be the only mailer sent to homes through the mail. For parents who do not have a computer, there are two available in the lobby at Lantana 1 during office hours. Also remember that all students must have the correct shots and medical exams prior to the first day of school or we cannot admit them.
RESPECT, PATIENCE, FLEXIBILITY: As always, the first week or two can be confusing; there are always many questions and many concerns. Most parents choose to drop their children off at school for the first week rather than use the busses, so there are many more cars on the carline and it is slower than it will be for the rest of the year. The office staff, administrators and teachers will resolve issues as quickly as possible, but safety and security are our main concerns. We expect parents and students to follow all directions given by staff or the security guards at all times. With an attitude of calmness, respect, patience and flexibility on the part of everyone, we will make the first weeks of school both exciting and memorable for our students, and that’s what it’s all about!
Thank you for your anticipated support, and I look forward to working with you and your children.
Marie Turchiaro, Principal
